President elect training will be held from April 22nd to April 23rd in Fort Wayne, Indiana
A Note From Doug
Before the details of this event are listed, I would like to take a moment to share some ASHRAE history, so everyone understands the importance of this event. The roots of ASHRAE started with the foundation that ASHRAE members (as professionals within our industry) could come together and share the experiences of professionals with a common cause related to the heating and ventilation needs of people within building. As ASHRAE was modified through the years to include air conditioning and refrigeration the experiences grew, and they continue to grow as we all face new challenges. The experiences of our society from the very beginning included not only the sharing of technical information for the common good of all people but is also included the professional growth of like professionals via social engagement and professional support of everyone within our common industry. Therefore, each chapter includes social activities as well as technical learning events. This combination of professional growth (technical and non-technical) events was, and is important at the ASHRAE regional also, because the regional level is where the connection is made from local chapters to the larger ASHRAE society base of over 55,000 members of ASHRAE from a global standpoint.
Region V has a tremendously rich history of ASHRAE milestones and accolades. To mention a few examples, the West Michigan ASHRAE Charter was signed by Willis Carrier, Gordon Holness from Detroit is a Past Society President, we have many members of Region V that are Distinguished Lecturers, plus the Detroit chapter and the Cleveland chapter both celebrated their 100th anniversary within the past several years. There are also many other Region V examples, but the important thought here is we come together as ASHRAE members within our region each year to continue the rich history our members started generations (up to over 100 years) before 2022. Part of this history and regional responsibility is to provide the training of upcoming chapter volunteers to lead their chapters to best serve their local membership and this is the primary focus of “President-Elect Training”. Thus, I ask everyone to embrace the Region V history and focus on how in 2022 we can come together and continue the training for the betterment of our members within all chapters of our region.
Moving forward here is what everyone needs to know and do in order for us to collectively complete our ASHRAE Regional responsibilities with “President-Elect Training”.
- Below is the link for everyone to use in reserving your room at the hotel in Fort Wayne where we are holding this training, and I if you would allow me, I would like to state why it is important to stay at this hotel verse staying elsewhere. This hotel has been extremely flexible working with our region as we were supposed to hold the 2019 CRC in Fort Wayne at thus location. But due to COVID, we had to post-pone this F2F event at the hotel until this summer, which has saved our region (and the Fort Wayne chapter a significant amount of money). Second, each chapter should have in their budgets funds to cover the expenses for leadership training, and the past 2 years this has been done via virtual training. So the assumption is all chapters should have extra funds this year to cover any individual training expense to better serve our membership as a whole. If anyone or any chapter does not have this funding available, please reach out to me for potential other options of funding. As a region of ASHRAE, one of our most important functions is to provide the best possible training of upcoming volunteer leadership for each chapter, and as chapters officers we take this seriously. Additionally, we have committed to this hotel a block of rooms (via the link provided below), so please respect this and it is encouraged that you reserve your room prior to March 21st so we know everyone has a room and we fulfill our obligations to the hotel.
- The activities on Friday in the afternoon are primarily for Regional Officers, but any chapter member who wish to attend are welcome as nothing is done behind closed doors. The Regional Planning meeting will start around 3 pm on Friday April 22nd. A separate agenda for this meeting will be posted and sent later to regional officers.
- After the regional planning meeting, anyone who has arrived at the hotel prior to 6 pm is invited to participate in a regional dinner close to the hotel where good eats, drinks, and conversation will occur, and Region V will cover the expense of this event to promote our founding society goals as ASHRAE volunteers.
- Saturday will include our Training session starting at 8 am in the hotel, our agenda will be shared to everyone soon. A light breakfast with a mid-morning snack, along with a lunch will be provided by Region V. We will use judgement as to a working and eating meeting to maximize our time together and be more efficient with everyone’s time. Usually, we conclude this training around 3 pm so everyone has plenty of travel time to return home this day.
- Your travel expense (usually mileage) is provided by ASHRAE at the society level, and you will be instructed as to how you apply for this funding while we are together on Saturday.
- Here are the items I would like everyone to complete (they are simple)
